Of the many health issues plaguing women today, Polycystic Ovarian Disease is one of the most common endocrine disorders affecting them. About 10-15 percent women, who are in their reproductive years, are facing fertility problems because of the disease.

PCOD is characterized by the formation of numerous small cysts on the edges of the ovaries that are usually not bigger than 8 mm each. Located just below the surface of the ovaries, these are eggs that contain undeveloped follicles.

Apart from genetics, obesity, stressful lifestyle and dietary habits are responsible for this disease. Some of the symptoms are irregular menstrual periods (amenorrhoea), infertility, recurrent miscarriages, delayed pregnancies, obesity, diabetes, growth of unwanted body hair, mood swings, acne (pimples), hair loss and obstructive sleep apnea.

For diagnosis, a physical examination of the patient is done, followed by an ultrasonography test to detect small follicles. Diagnostic laparoscopy and various blood tests also aid in correct diagnosis. Though PCOD is called an incurable disease, homeopathy has remedies that can help improve the production of hormones. The treatment varies from patient to patient, depending on their constitution. The commonly used medicines are puls, apis, nat and mar.
