Why Unani?

A natural solution to lose weight is the first thing you would opt for, as against harsh medication, surgical procedure and its after affects. And that is what Unani, an ancient Indian system of treatment does. Unani’s believes in nature’s readily available resources which contain medicinal value, such as extracts from vegetables, animals and herbs. This perception and the treatment processed are documented in ancient texts.

Unani describes an obese person to be most vulnerable to eight types of diseases including heart disease, high blood pressure, diabetes, orthopedic problems and gall bladder conditions as compared to an individual with average weight.

Unani’s weight loss solution is through natural ways – by strictly adhering to a diet regime. Typically the recommended diet for the obese is prudent meals alternating with liquids as enumerated below:

  • Honey is excellent for obesity. It activates the deposited fat in the body and puts it into circulation, which is then used as energy for normal functions. Combined with lemon juice in hot water and taken early in the morning, it serves as an effective remedy to lose weight.
  • Breakfast: Non-fat milk with sprouts of wheat or beans for breakfast.
  • Before Lunch: A glass of fresh orange, carrot or pineapple juice 30 minutes before lunch.
  • Lunch: Raw vegetable salad, steamed and boiled vegetables, and buttermilk garnished with cumin coriander and ginger.
  • Tea Time: Lemon tea, coconut water or fresh vegetable soup with some dry fruits in mid-afternoon.
  • Dinner: Whole grain bread, steamed vegetables and seasonal fruits (not banana and apple).

Other weight loss tips are:

  • Salt: Cut down intake of too much salt as it is associated with weight gain.
  • Spices which can be used in various food preparations like dry ginger, cinnamon, black pepper are effective weight loss ingredients.
  • Milk products: Cut down on milk products like cheese and butter which are rich in fat. Non-vegetarian foods may be avoided.
  • Veggies: Vegetables like cabbage, drumstick, bitter gourd help in weight loss as they inhibit the conversion of sugar and other carbohydrates into fat.
  • Portion size: Make sure that the portions are small. (one portion of rice should not be more than the quantity which can fit in your fist) .Eat less, more nutritious food at regular interval of 4 to 5 hours. This will enhance your metabolism rate and prevent your body from converting the food you eat into fat
  • Physical Activity: Apart from diet, exercise forms an important part of weight loss program as it uses up the excessive calories which are stored as fat. Walking, running and swimming tones up your muscles, strengthens bones.

Unani also has weight loss medications, prepared from the following herbs:
