Life is said to be a gift. It is our duty to nurture and make the most of this gift. Healthy living is one way to appreciate it. With new milestones being achieved in medical sector, today, human beings live much longer. Now, the next task is to improve the quality of human life. No one can detect your ailment, unless and until you take the initiative of curing it. The idea of routine health checkups steps in here.

The regular screenings and tests that are conducted are known as health checkups. In simple words, they make you aware of what is going on inside the body. The kind of health checkup a person requires depends on his/her age, sex, family history, lifestyle etc. The kind of job you do, food you eat, discipline you follow, all come under the lifestyle you lead.

There is a reason why prevention is better than cure. Once the disorder is detected, you stand in a much better position of taking the correct steps to treat it. Regular health checkups are important as:

  • They update you about your health. They give you a kind of reality check and thus, provide you with peace of mind.
  • They give you the time to strategise your lifestyle according to the health reports and take proper health related decisions.
  • They pick up the possible areas of concern, much before the symptoms come to the fore.
  • They highlight the trends in your health, so give you fair idea about the kind of problems you could face in the near future.
  • Most importantly, they motivate you to adopt a healthy lifestyle. You will automatically get serious about your health once you know your actual condition.

Along with physical health checkups, mental health checkups are needed too. A social stigma is related to mental health, but regular mental health screenings can prevent common lifestyle disorders like anxiety, stress and depression. If left untreated, these disorders may grow into major mental problems like schizophrenia etc.

Adults need to get every body organ tested apart from the following screenings:

  • Breast cancer (females)
  • Cervical cancer (females)
  • Chlamydia and other Sexually Transmitted Diseases
  • Colorectal cancer
  • Diabetes
  • High blood pressure
  • High cholesterol
  • Depression
  • Overweight and obesity
  • Abdominal aortic aneurysm (males and smokers)
  • Skin cancer
  • Oral health
  • Viral hepatitis
  • Uric acid
  • Prostate cancer (males)

Annual health checkups become more important once the age of 50 is crossed. The body’s power to fight against germs reduces. Thus, regular immunisation also goes a long way when it comes to healthy living.

Before going to the physician, prepare the following:

  • Review family history
  • Review list of vaccinations you are due for
  • List out the points you need to discuss with the doctor

Often, people consider it expensive and unnecessary, but this yearly routine comes handy in the long term when you know your body and are able to protect it from various ailments and diseases.
