    Hi,

Hirsutism may be because of many conditions including: hypothyroidism, hyperthyroidism, adrenal androgen excess syndrome. It might also be because of some drugs like steroids (anabolic or corticosteroids), antiepileptics. It is necessary to consult your doctor to know exact cause.

Hirsutism - or unwanted facial hair in male pattern - is common problem. it is excess male hormone production - could be from multiple reasons -

1)Polycystic ovarian syndrome - also have irregular periods , obesity

2)Congential adrenal hyperplasia - this is inherited condition - affects menstruation

    3) Cushing's - obesity esp abdominal, hypertension, swelling and affects menstruation

4)Medications - like prednisone ( steroids) , certain meds for endometriosis.

    5) Familial - inherited - mediterrean, middle eastern, south asian women are more predisposed.

Treatment - If there is underlying cause , fixing it .

Birth control pills will fix hirsutism from Polycystic situation.

Spironolactone - not recommended if planning pregnancy .

Cosmetic procedures like Laser, Electolysis and topical creams also help.

It is important to know you do not have any underlying problem.
