Here are the precautions that need to be taken: 1. Eating healthy - Less fatty foods like potato chips or any fried food. Adding more vegetables(preferably cooked or boiled and not fried) and fresh fruits. Decreasing added sugar use or any sweets. 2. Maintaining a workout regimen like brisk walking or bicycling or jogging or playing any racket game for at least 30 minutes a day for at least 5 days a week. 3. Maintaing a healthy weight for your height, which is measured as BMI (body mass index). This should be in the range of 20 to 25. 25 to 30 falls under overweight category and >30 falls under obesity. Despite following all the above suggestions, if your cholesterol still remains high then you need to be on medications. If you have any additional risk factors for heart disease then you also need to be on medications despite following a healthy life style. Please let us know if you have any other risk factors like high blood pressure, heart attacks, diabetes, smoking or any history of heart attacks in your parents, brothers or sisters. Or talk to your doctor.

Starting a medication for cholesterol depends on the number of risk factors and the level of cholesterol.
