5 Tips to Manage Arthritis Symptoms in Winter

Tip of the Day:

Arthritis is one of the common winter ailments that cause inflammation of joints. Due to the swelling and stiffness of the joints arthritis can be agonizingly painful. Osteoarthritis is the most common forms of arthritis with nearly 2.5 million patients suffering in India alone as per experts.

Though arthritis has no cure, it can be well-managed with a few tips well within your reach:

  • Exercising:
Regular physical exercise is an effective way of controlling the symptoms, though it may be painful. Do not resist from exercising as it helps in blood circulation and eases the stiff joints.
  • Weight loss:
The lesser the weight the better it is for arthritis. It puts less pressure on the joints like knees, ankles and hip and helps reduce the pain. Eat healthy and exercise regularly to manage weight.
  • Massage:
A massage of arthritic joints can reduce the pain and stiffness of joints for all types of arthritis, particularly in winters according to Tiffany Field, PhD, a research psychologist at the University of Miami Medical School.
  • Turmeric:
Turmeric, a regular ingredient in Indian recipes has several medicinal properties. Research studies prove that turmeric has anti-inflammatory properties which work very well on treating osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.
  • Omega- 3 fatty acids:
Including Omega-3 fatty acid-rich foods in your diet (like nuts, seeds and fish oil) is half the battle fought, in treating rheumatoid arthritis. Omega- 3 fatty acids cuts down the chemicals produced that lead to the chronic joint pain.
