Resistance training in the gym is found to be effective in reducing fat levels in the liver, which is responsible for fatty liver disease, finds a new study.

"For patients suffering from physical limitations or low motivation that prevents them from performing aerobic exercises, resistance training can be an effective alternative," say researchers.

Fatty liver disease is a common condition in the western world, which is more likely to occur in diabetics, obese or over-weight individuals or with abdominal obesity and dyslipidemia etc. If left untreated, fatty liver disease may also lead to liver cirrhosis and inflammation.

While it is known that physical activity can help these individuals, aerobic exercises are known to be time consuming. Now, the researchers took in 82 study subjects affected by the disease and asked them to follow 2 different exercise types.

On careful examination of different markers such as blood pressure, liver enzymes, insulin, blood sugar etc. it was found that resistance training in particular, was extremely effective in reducing liver fat, however, overall fat levels were not that profoundly affected.

"We strongly recommend patients with fatty liver to get involved in routine physical activity, be it resistance training or aerobics, maintain a healthy diet and reduce weight," the researchers added.
