Vibrating Pill May Help Tackle Constipation

Millions are affected by constipation and while medications are an effective strategy, they tend to have side effects.

Thankfully, scientists have now developed a new capsule that would vibrate in the colon and help tackle constipation. This vibrating pill would stimulate movement inside the lower intestine similar to peristalsis- a natural biological process that is known to help push the waste through the bowel, thereby preventing constipation and making evacuation of the bowels easier and less effortful.

The researchers started with a multivitamin-sized pill and tested it in 26 patients who suffered from constipation. “It’s completely novel,” Eamonn Quigley, chief of gastroenterology at Houston Methodist Hospital in Texas, explained.

While early tests have demonstrated positive results, a lot of studies will be needed to confirm the efficacy of this pill as a treatment option.
