Are You at Risk for Osteoporosis?

The prospect of breaking your hip bone or wrist by a simple fall can be intimidating. And this prospect is increasing by the day with younger population among Indians, says research study.

Doctors blame our lifestyle for osteoporosis risk or bone loss. Osteoporosis causes the bones to become brittle and weak, increasing the risk of fractures especially in the hip, wrist and spine.Statistics say 1 out of 8 males and 1 out of 3 females in India is affected by osteoporosis.

Factors responsible for fractures:


Women: Post-menopausal women over 50 years old are at a greater risk.


Family history: A family member with osteoporosis increases your risk of developing osteoporosis.


Poor diet: A diet with less calcium and unbalanced diet is a risk factor.


Medication: Extended usage of medications such as steroids, cardiac and diabetes drugs.


Sedentary Lifestyle: Inactive lifestyle, smoking and regular alcohol intake cause osteoporosis.


Excessive caffeine and carbonated drinks.

Loss of height over a period of time

Tips to keep your bones healthy:

Eat a balanced diet rich in calcium and vitamin D such as milk, yogurt, green leafy vegetables and fish. Also get natural sunlight to reduce the risk of osteoporosis.

Get regular exercise to prevents bone loss and strengthen bones

Cut down smoking and excessive alcohol consumption.

Reduce stress with activities such as yoga and meditation

Get a bone mineral density test as advised by your doctor.
