Be Wary of Bronchitis this Winter

With winter setting in, cold, coughs and viral fevers are most common, among which Bronchitis (viral infection) is one such viral fever. Bronchitis begins with a simple cold or other respiratory infection.

Inflammation of the mucous membrane lining the tubes that carry air in and out of lungs, is Bronchitis. About 90 percent of bronchitis cases are caused by various viruses.


Bronchitis may be acute or chronic. The former is more common and easier to treat and improves within a few days while, the latter is a serious condition and can lead to Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD).


Symptoms: Common symptoms for both types of Bronchitis include:

  • Chest discomfort
  • Cough (with clear/ yellow-green sputum)
  • Fatigue
  • Shortness of breath
  • Wheezing

Treatment: Though treated by antibiotics, NSAIDs (nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs) cough medicine, non-drug therapy also helps:

  • Taking plenty of fluids
  • Breathing humidified air
  • Avoiding alcohol and caffeine containing beverages
  • Avoiding exposure to air pollution and smoking

Prevention: Prevention is the best form of cure

  • Stay away from infected person
  • Avoid crowds particularly in the winter season
  • Cover your nose and mouth with a mask while in dusty places
  • Wash your hands with antibacterial soap
