Laser Hair Removal

Laser-Hair - Removal

Out of several methods for removing unwanted hair (smelly hair-removal creams, sharp razors, hot wax etc.), none being permanent, laser hair removal is the only clinically proven most effective treatment to date. After two decades of testing, commercial usage of laser hair removal by salons and beauticians started in mid-1990. But in recent past, the dermatologists recognized the effectiveness of laser hair removal and since then it has been effectively used in clinics and even at homes with specifically designed devices.

In men, the face, neck, back, buttocks, chest, ears, groin/genitals, hands and knuckles are most common areas for hair removal, while in women, face, neck, back, areolas, bikini area, legs and underarms are the most common areas. Using this method, the unwanted facial and body hair in both men and women is gently and quickly removed with a desired end result at the end of a course of treatments. Number of sittings depends on the area of the removal.

How does it work and what to expect?

With the selective photo-thermolysis using laser beam, laser beam gets absorbed by the melanin pigment in the hair and converts into heat energy damaging the stem cells in the hair follicle. With more melanin in hair, laser is attracted to hair tissue than to the melanin in skin and any heat energy in skin is easily dissipated compared to hair and thereby leaving the surrounding tissue without any damages.

Though people with darker skins can be treated using a different wavelength for deeper penetration,  the differential amount of melanin in hair and the skin in people with dark hair and fair skin makes it much more easier to treat than later. Owing to multiple hair follicles that can be damaged with single beam, laser removal is the procedure of choice for hair removal from large areas like back, shoulders, arms and legs.

Advantages of Laser hair removal include removal of redundant hair from face, leg, arm, underarm etc. without damaging the surrounding tissue. Laser beams treat many follicles at a time in a few seconds resulting in 90-95% permanent hair removal in 3-5 sessions.

The regular bumps, burns, cuts etc. from the regular time-consuming hair removal techniques can be avoided for life! Disadvantages include itching, redness of skin, swelling in surrounding areas disappear within 2-3 days. Sometimes serious side effects like acne, skin discoloration and some pain can prevail. Owing to thicker body hair in men, it can be more painful in men.

Based on the body part and the area to be treated, 3-8 sessions at 4-8 weeks interval is ideal allowing the laser treatment during anagen/active phase of hair growth. For body parts like face, shorter interval would suffice owing to the short anagen phase of facial hair.
